Be part of a special SNAICC book - the 25th anniversary of National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day

This year marks the 25th anniversary of National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day, held annually on August 4. To commemorate this wonderful achievement, SNAICC is producing a beautiful ‘coffee table’ book of photographs that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family and culture, every day, 365 days a year.
We invite Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities and organisations from every corner of Australia to contribute photos to the book. Photos need to suit this year’s National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day theme: Our Children, Our Culture, Our Way.

Later this year many services will receive their first ratings against the new national standard from the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children continue to be over-represented within the child protection system

Child protection Australia 2010–11, a report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, shows a 13 per cent fall in the number of children subject to notifications of possible child abuse or neglect compared with the previous year.
However, the report finds Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children continue to be over-represented within the child protection system. At 30 June 2011, the rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children on care and protection orders was over 9 times the rate of non-Indigenous children (rates of 51.4 and 5.4 per 1,000 children, respectively).
