Introduction

National Aboriginal and Islander Children's Day (NAICD) is a celebration of our children. Held on 4 August each year, NAICD was first observed by SNAICC in 1988. Each year SNAICC produces and sends out resources to help you celebrate NAICD.

Celebrate our children

All those who support children, including early childhood services, teachers, educators, foster carers, welfare workers, policy makers and government are encouraged to take a break from their normal routine and organise activities involving children and families. Such local events celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and reinforce how important it is for their wellbeing to be connected to culture.
Read more about how to register your event and see examples of past events here.

You could invite families and communities to:

  • a bbq lunch or morning tea
  • an open day at your child care centre
  • enjoy games and sports
  • arts and craft activities
  • storytelling with local Elders
  • a dance, concert or play
  • an awards presentation
  • an art exhibition
  • listen to a guest speaker

Register Your NAICD story

Register your NAICD event, then send us your pictures and words for inclusion on our website, in the SNAICC e-bulletin and SNAICC News.

Going strong since 1988

As SNAICC's flagship event, NAICD draws attention to SNAICC's priorities for our children and families. Each year, the theme for NAICD has highlighted a significant issue, concern or hope for the year. We are proud of the story the themes tell about our work since 1998.

Past NAICD themes are captured in the NAICD posters - beautiful, powerful posters showing the passion and heart of our organisation and communities.

NAICD Resources

Selected SNAICC early childhood members and subscribers receive NAICD resources for free. We encourage other organisations and schools to contact SNAICC and buy materials.
