Aboriginal human rights leader, Mick Dodson, named Australian of the Year
02 February 2009
SNAICC offers our sincere congratulations to Mick Dodson, a great campaigner for the rights of children and families, for being named Australian of the Year for 2009.
Mick Dodson has a long history of tirelessly working in advancing human rights, not the least of which as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) in the 1990s.
As Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Mick Dodson led, with then President of HREOC Sir Ron Wilson, the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families, including in hearings and taking evidence and submissions from members of the Stolen Generations across the country.
Mick Dodson also gave an inspiring speech at the launch of the report of the National Inquiry, Bringing Them Home, 0n 26 May 1997.
A copy of Mick Dodson's speech is reproduced with permission in SNAICC's 2007 publication to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the release of the Bringing Them Home report.
The publication, 'Remember Me': Commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Bringing Them Home report, is available for download or to order free from SNAICC.
